‘I never recognised her except in fragments’. (taken from Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes, Vintage, 1993, p.65)
This idea tied into many of my own thoughts upon portraiture and is something that I return to. I am interested in how you depict people, usually in paint, usually in oil, on canvas. Working from photos, I like to take the completed authoritative image and pull it apart slightly through the medium of paint. Undoing and fragmenting the photographic representative ‘likeness’ by fraying it a little, as though it were a piece of material, and allowing some gaps to appear.
